New Year’s Day lead vocalist, Ash Costellos tattoos include 9 tattoos on her right arm, (which she plans to make into a full sleeve), four on her hands and two little tattoos behind her ears.
Ash Costellos tattoos reveal lots about her big personality and began in 2008, with two little red and black broken heart symbols, one behind each ear.
According to Ash, she got these done on impulse when she was on tour in Colorado:
“We were playing at this club in Colorado called the Black Sheep. I was bored and there was a tattoo parlor next door, so I walked in and I said ‘I’m in a band . . . if anyone wants to tattoo me for free, have at it!’ And a guy volunteered.”
Ash Costellos tattoos – Mickey Mouse silhouette
Ash Costellos tattoos make 3 references to her love of Disneyland and in November 2009, she had a cute, black silhouette of Mickey Mouse done on the side of her right forefinger.
This is one of Ash Costellos tattoos that her friends Brooke and Sheena also had done to celebrate their friendship and fan-ship of Disneyland California!
Discussing her early life, Ash told an interviewer about her family’s long-standing connection with Walt Disney and Disneyland:
‘My family is a big Disneyland family. My great grandma, my great uncle, they all worked at Disneyland. My great uncle Eddie worked alongside Walt Disney developing the art form. My grandma was a can-can dancer.
My mom worked there for a little bit, I worked there for a little bit . . . I grew up like walking distance down the street. My family and I used to go to Disneyland like 3 times a week . . . So it just reminds me of being really happy at that time in my life. I can’t let it go!’
Vintage Mickey Mouse tattoos
Ash Costello’s tattoos definitely show her ‘fun’ side and in July 2010, Ash added this super-cute, adorable Mickey Mouse just above her right elbow, along with her mother’s name, ‘SANDRA D’.
She tweeted this message, remembering her happy childhood and paying tribute to her mother:
‘Mickey of course! Old-school pie eyes & my mom’s name, Sandra D. Innocent & virtuous, she raised me right.’
Ash Costellos tattoos – believe in yourself
In August 2010, Ash got another bold, dense black tattoo on the side of her wrist which says ‘Believe’ in Disney font and her best friend has a matching tattoo on her ankle.
Maybe this refers to the theme-song of Disney, ‘When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true’ – if you believe!
Ash Costellos tattoos – lightning bolt on finger
In 2010, Ash was a committed fan of Harry Potter and to show she totally identified with Harry’s fight against the forces of evil, she copied his famous lightning-bolt scar as a small black tattoo on her left fore-finger!
Ash Costellos music influences
Taken from the artwork on The Ugly Organ album by Cursive, this stylish version of crooked piano keys, in black on her right arm, shows that Ash Costello’s tattoos began to reflect her music influences in July 2010.
Ash says this album completely changed the way she wrote music and contributed to her amazing success!
Ash Costellos tattoos – black crow right arm sleeve
The large black crow on the inside of her right arm, (May 2011 – tattoo artist Baba Austin), was up to then the largest of Ash Costello’s tattoos.
It’s an impressive tattoo with the crow’s beak open wide to show it’s ‘cawing’, but it surprised Ash when she saw how much skin it covered!
Around the bird is a flowing banner containing a quotation from Slaughterhouse 5, one of Ash Costello’s favourite books of all time! It’s a famous fantasy novel by Kurt Vonnegut and ironically enough, this is the quote Ash chose:
‘Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt’
However, in an interview later on, Ash confessed:
‘I know this doesn’t make sense, but I didn’t realize it was so big when he (Baba) free-handed it. Before this one, I would have said that tattoos don’t hurt . . . but this one hurt so bad! . . . and I was like, ‘Oh, wow, I just ended up with half a sleeve and I don’t even know how!’
Ash Costellos tattoos – upper right arm flower tattoo
Next to join Ash Costellos tattoos was this beautifully drawn grey-scale flower placed on the edge of her right shoulder.
And beneath the 3-D flower tattoo, there’s another example of the traditional style of some of Ash Costellos tattoos.
Ash Costellos tattoos – ‘Your Love Carries On’
This elaborate banner with tendrils and curlicues resembling a climbing-plant is a beautiful way to celebrate the constantly growing love that Ash feels from those around her!
It balances the crow perfectly and carries the phrase – ‘Your love carries on’ – in romantic, cursive hand-writing!
Ash Costello’s ‘former’ tattoos
In the early days of Ash Costellos tattoos, she had a musical note knows as a ‘breve’ on the inside of her right elbow. However, this disappeared underneath the half-sleeve crow tattoo.
And Ash Costello’s tattoos also used to include the Yoga meditation symbol OM, on her right elbow, which looks pretty cool in black outline.
Ash loves dark fantasy figures
But by 2013, she wanted something bigger, brighter and ‘darker’ to show how much she loves Hallowe’en!
Hallowe’en is definitely Ash Costello’s favourite holiday and she dresses in Halloween-type outfits every day. In October 2013, artist Shaun Kama inked over Ash’s OM tattoo with a colourful and creepy, orange pumpkin candle-lamp!
Those candle flames are a pair of unearthly yellow eyes boring deep into your mind and the mouth may be smile-shaped, but this creature is not your friend!
Ash Costellos tattoos of hope
The razorblade tattoo on Ash’s wrist represents her struggle with depression and emphasises that you can get over the most severe clinical depression and start enjoying life again!
My Friday the 13th tattoo with the @nydrock boys. To remind me . . . I have survived the worst times, the fucking worst, but I pushed through it and now I’m enjoying the best times with my best friends.
This tattoo done on Friday, 13th September 2013, includes the Roman Numeral XIII or 13 in ordinary numbers. It looks shocking, but actually carries a really optimistic message for anyone suffering depression that things do get better, so don’t give up!
I love the bright pink-red that tattoo artist, Danny Anchor, used in February 2014 to add drama to Ash Costellos tattoo shrieking, ‘Love Kills’ – just below the matching red ‘razor-cut’!
Ash Costello’s Tattoos – Hands
Ash Costello’s tattoos from February 2014 are themed around ‘shocking’ images celebrating the fantasy world of vampires and zombies she loves!
This tattoo on the back of her right hand says, ‘Dead’ in Gothic script scrawled across the back of her hand as if Count Dracula has just finished writing it with a goose-quill pen dipped in blood!
This fits with Ash’s sense of humour and she often refers to herself as ‘Living Dead Girl’!
On her right thumb, Ash has a stunning black and white skull tattoo, which is the band Misfits’ logo and was done by Danny Anchor in December 2013.
Ash has, Caviar, written in cursive script on the inside of her right wrist – perhaps to remind her that she’s a valuable and rare human being!
Ash Costello’s tattoos – Love thrills!
If love breaks your heart, the best remedy is finding love with someone better! Ash Costello’s tattoos may show the pain of lost love, but it also records how she bounced back and found love with boyfriend, Nikki Misery!
This romantic yellow, red and blue broken heart tattoo on her right hand matches the other half of a broken heart on Nikki’s hand – so whenever they hold hands the two halves come together to form one complete heart!
With the words, ‘I wished for you’ written around the border of Ash’s heart tattoo, you can almost hear Nikki whispering back, ‘And I wished for you’.
Yes, there’s still a little run of blood trickling out of the broken heart, but it’s great that she’s in love and happy now!
